A Month of Rust — macro time-lapse

A macro time-lapse of a piece of steel going rusty over a 30-day period. Magnification is pretty high, what you see here is about 5mm (1/5in) across. A still photo was taken every 2 hours. As you can see there’s a lot of activity going on at the start and later it slows down. Eventually I’d like to keep shooting long enough to see the surface breaking up but that could take a year or more…

A macro view of the garden.
Mostly taken using a Panasonic GH2 hacked with the cbrandin patch to 66Mbps, and Nikon 100mm AFS VR macro lens. Some material was recorded with a Nikon D7000. Recorded at 1080i resolution and down sampled to 720p for Vimeo. I will see about uploading the 1080p full HD version which looks even better.

It was hot and rainy and we were constantly negotiating with nature.

We filmed with a 7D, a 50 mmm, a macro, and a bunch of crystal paperweights. Cut on FCPX.
